THE PROJECT - updated June 2024

A messenger angel without functions, without landmarks, wanders on earth among humans. Eternity weighs on him.
But his spleen turns into a dreamlike and luminous quest. He wishes to have a body and desires the ephemeral nature of our humanity. In the form of an oratorio with three musicians on stage, this creation alternates between visual and musical sequences and introspections sung by the Angel. We wrote this show as a poetic wandering in which a double story is constructed. That of the angel wanting to become human and that of a puppet gradually transforming into a human.

Present in all religions, in Western and Eastern cultures… the figure of the Angel is omnipresent and its history is fascinating. The image of the mystical or symbolic Angel has been transformed into an icon of popular culture: on Christmas trees, on Valentine's Day for lovers, in advertising, in contemporary art, in erotic imagery, and in kitsch art.

The symbolic figure of the Angel often represents wisdom, purity, lightness, morality, or an invisible guardian. Like many figures that seek to connect humanity to the divine, the Angel carries its share of clichés and playful reinterpretations.

The vast reflection on our human existence is a field of research that seems to me to be the foundation of all artistic work or act. Imagining an angel speaking on stage is obviously a delicate and fascinating metaphorical concept.

This character of Angel is composed of several references: pop icons, visual and dreamlike images. Many works have influenced me, including Wim Wenders' film, Wings of Desire. This statement by the director during a conversation with Serge Daney resonated deeply with me: "It's in order to be able to show humans that I invented angels."

Through this project, we seek a human dialectic. We define this Angel as a messenger without function, without theological markers. It no longer seems attached to a God or to a defined religion.

Creating a platform for an angel who is dying of immortality is a theatrical impulse serving a broader theme about our humanity and our fantasy of immortality. I immersed myself passionately in various texts, because it is not only religions that promise us the continuation of our existence after death in the afterlife, but also philosophy, which has, in a way, adopted this unconscious belief. This project is an energetic and radiant reaction to our humanity, which seems neglected, sometimes angry, searching for identity. It's like a need to create a creature that can be a celestial outlet. A transgressive character to try to reactivate luminous and combative dissent in our human lives.

If even angels get the blues, then…!

In the form of a wild oratorio, the rebellious Angel sings, rants, and recounts his angelic journey. He mocks humans and their petty troubles. He has traversed generations and observed how humans repeat the same mistakes decade after decade.

It is a chimeric creature that seeks to bring forth impertinence in living things.

The Angel's story is built up in fragments in the form of original songs written by songwriters for the character.

Our musical influences are hybrid and raw, blending classical music elements with the sounds of cello, violin, vibraphone, and more electronic textures. The musical universe created by the three instrumentalists, Marion, Guillaume, and Cyrille, is influenced by Björk, Bot'Ox, and Laake.

As his story unfolds, the Angel's voice becomes increasingly filled with jealousy. Perhaps he longs to become mortal? He cannot experience what humans feel.

Would the Angel envy the ephemeral nature of humanity?
